LORD KELVIN

1. He was born on 26 june 1824 in United Kingdom(UK)

2. Lord Kelvin of Scotland studied at Cambridge University, was a champion rower and later became a professor of natural philosophy at the University of Glasgow.

3. Lord Kelvin invented the Kelvin scale in 1848 used on thermometers.

4. The Kelvin scale measures the ultimate extremes of hot and cold.

5. Kelvin developed the idea of absolute temperature. It is called the second law of thermodynamics and developed the dynamical theory of heat.

6. In the 19th century, scientists were researching possibility of the lowest temperature. The Kelvin scale uses the same units of Celsius scale but it starts at absolute zero.

7. Absolute zero is 0°C which is – 273 K.

8. Lord Kelvin was passed away on 17 December 1907.

HEAT

Key words – Meanings and explanation

1) Temperature : The degree of hotness or coldness

2) Heat : Heat is a flow of energy, that flows from a body at higher temperature to a body at lower temperature

3) Calorie : Calorie is the CGS unit of heat. The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gm of water by 1 degree celsius is called calorie

4) Absolute temperature :Temperature measured on Kelvin scale is called absolute temperatura

5) Condensation : Condensation can be defined as the phase change from gas to liquid

6) Humidity : The amount of water vapour present in air is called humidity

7) Dew : The water droplets condensed on window – panes l, flowers, grass etc.., in winter morning is known as dew

8) Fog : The droplets of water floating in air due to condensation and forming a thick mist which restricts visibility is called fog

9) Joule : The unit of energy of work

10) Kinetic energy : The energy possessed by a body by virtueThe of its motion.

Advantages of SI Units

1) All the units are well defined without any ambiguity

2) All the units are easily reproducible

3) The base and supplementry units covers all branches of science and engineering

4) Almost all countries in the world have adopted SI system

5) There are special names to some difficult and familiar derived units
